St Andrew's Cathedral is an Anglican cathedral near City Hall in Singapore's central business district, less than 1 km north of Raffles Place in a straight line. It is the mother church of the Anglican Diocese of Singapore. Sir Stamford Raffles set aside the land for an Anglican church in his town plan of 1822, but building did not begin until the community raised funds in 1834. It was named after Saint Andrew, patron saint of Scotland, in honour of the Scottish community who donated to it. A church has stood on the site since 1836, while the present building dates from 1856–1861. After more than two years of restoration, the cathedral nave reopened on 24 December 2023. The brilliant white Neo-Gothic cathedral rises with a tall spire and small pointed pinnacles, set in a wide green lawn shaded by huge trees, with the towers of downtown around it in striking contrast. Visitors admire it from the lawn and surrounding gardens and may go inside during visiting hours, respecting service times. It is close to City Hall station and the Civic District's landmarks.
