The oldest purpose-built Anglican church in Southeast Asia, built between 1817 and 1818 and consecrated in 1819, in the first decades of George Town after the British East India Company took the island in 1786. Its design is said to be based on St George's Cathedral in Madras in India: a white building with massive Doric columns, a front portico and a tower topped by a slender spire, on a wide green lawn. In the garden stands a small round pavilion of white columns raised in memory of Francis Light, founder of the British settlement. The church was badly damaged in the Second World War and looted of most of its contents, then restored, and it was declared a national heritage site in 2007. Entry is free when it is open, visiting hours are limited and change, so the view from outside is the main event. It stands at the heart of the World Heritage zone on the street known as the Street of Harmony, which also holds the Goddess of Mercy Temple, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple and the Kapitan Keling Mosque, so you can take them all in on one walk.
