Toronto's historic food market, trading on its site since the early nineteenth century in a red-brick building that once housed the city council, and one of North America's best-known food markets and a local favourite. The South Market hall holds more than a hundred stalls on two floors: fresh fish and seafood, cheeses from Canada and the world, bakeries and sweets, fruit and vegetables, spices, honey and Canada's famous maple syrup. The lower level has prepared food from the world's kitchens and specialty shops. On Saturday mornings the market fills with visitors, and on Sundays an antiques and collectibles market is held. Entry is free; the market is usually closed on Sundays and Mondays and opens early in the morning, per visitor guides. It is ideal for lunch on a walk around Old Town.
