State Flag Square is a large public square on Neftchiler Avenue in Baku's Bayil district, spreading over 60 hectares at the southern end of the bay. Its enormous flag can be seen from much of the city, and it has become a landmark in pictures of the Baku waterfront. The square was created by decree in 2007. In 2010 it gained a 162 m flagpole, certified by Guinness World Records as the world's tallest at the time. It closed for restoration in 2017, and a new pole, about 195 m from its base, was finished in 2024. In November 2025 Guinness recorded the 40 by 80 m flag raised here as the largest flag flown in the world. The upper section of 3 hectares carries the state symbols, including the coat of arms, the anthem and a gilded bronze map of the country. Under the pedestal is the State Flag Museum, shaped like an eight-pointed star. On the other side lie the waters of the bay and the city skyline. It is 7.5 km in a straight line from central Baku, and visitors usually take a taxi. The best views are from afar, from the seafront boulevard or the high ground above the Old City. It is windy here, as in all of Baku, so bring a light jacket. Parts of the square may close for official occasions, so check first.
