A free passenger ferry run by New York City's transport department, crossing 8.4 kilometres of New York Harbor between Whitehall Terminal in Lower Manhattan and St. George Terminal on Staten Island in about 25 minutes. It has been completely fare-free since 1997 and runs 24 hours a day, seven days a week, leaving every 15 to 20 minutes at peak times and every half hour otherwise, on orange boats that have become a city icon. Visitors love it because it passes close to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and gives a superb view of the Lower Manhattan skyline receding and then approaching on the way back, at no cost at all. The ride is free with no booking; stand on the right-hand side on the way out for the best view of the statue, per visitor guides. On Staten Island you can simply catch the next boat back, and the sunset crossings are the most beautiful.
