A volunteer society in Rotterdam that keeps steam locomotives and historic carriages and actually runs them on the Dutch rail network on announced excursions. The difference between this and a railway museum is operation. A steam locomotive is not an object on display but a machine needing a crew, continuous maintenance and licences to run on a modern electrified network governed by automatic signalling. Keeping one working requires skills — boiler welding, firing, driving — that are no longer taught anywhere, so they pass within the society from one generation to the next. That is the less obvious side of industrial heritage: preserving the machine is relatively easy, and preserving the knowledge needed to operate it is the challenge. Through the society's official site; dates are announced months ahead. Seats are limited and sell out, particularly the seasonal runs around Christmas. Prices vary by route and carriage class. If your visit is short you are more likely to catch a depot day than an excursion.
The Dutch Railway Museum in Utrecht is open daily, its collection is large and its presentation excellent for families — the practical option if railways interest you and you cannot catch an operating day here.
