A small island on the Montenegrin coast, about 6 km southeast of Budva, joined to the mainland by a narrow sandbar and covered in tightly packed stone houses under red roofs, one of the best-known sights on the Adriatic. Once a fortified fishing village, it became a luxury hotel resort, now run as Aman Sveti Stefan, so access to the island itself is limited to resort guests and diners. The thing to do is take the famous photo of the island from the road or the viewpoints above it, then walk down to the pinkish sand beaches on either side of the sandbar. Viewing from outside is free and the public beach beside the island is open, with sections reserved for the resort at a charge. The best photos come late in the day, when the sun slants across the red roofs.

It is a private resort, open to guests and diners only, but you can photograph it from the road and use the public beach beside it.
