A historic compound in the heart of Central that was the city's main police headquarters, made up of three declared monuments: the former Central Police Station, the Central Magistracy and Victoria Prison. Restored, it reopened on 29 May 2018 as a centre for heritage and arts named Tai Kwun. Its old stone and brick buildings ring a wide parade ground, with former prison cells you can step into and exhibitions telling the story of policing, justice and prisons in Hong Kong. The restoration, run by the Hong Kong Jockey Club with the government, added two modern buildings clad in aluminium blocks that hold contemporary art galleries and a performance hall, alongside restaurants, cafés and shops in the old buildings. Entry to the compound is free and it opens daily 08:00–23:00, with shorter hours for the heritage exhibitions, per Tai Kwun's website; some shows charge a fee. It is close to the Mid-Levels escalator.
