Hong Kong Park is a public park beside Cotton Tree Drive in Central, about 5 km south of Tsim Sha Tsui in a straight line. It opened on 23 May 1991, covers 8 hectares and is an example of modern design blending with natural landscape. Part of the site was known as Cantonment Hill in early colonial days and later held the Victoria Barracks, handed to the government in 1979 and turned into the present park. Historic buildings have been kept, including Flagstaff House of 1846, now the Museum of Teaware, and several former barracks buildings that became arts and education centres. Its main feature is the Edward Youde Aviary, the largest aviary in Hong Kong, along with a conservatory. Ponds, small waterfalls and streams wind between rocks and dense tropical trees, with the glass towers of Central rising above, so green and city sit side by side. Fish and turtles fill the ponds. Visitors stroll the paths, walk through the large aviary on a raised walkway among the trees and visit the teaware museum. The park is a calm oasis in busy Central.
