The Moomin Museum

Tampere Hall is **the largest concert and congress hall in the Nordic countries**, opened in 1990, and among the most notable Finnish buildings of the 1980s. **Sakari Laitinen and Esa Piironen** designed it: a low white mass under curved wave-like roofs that reflect the northern light. The usual Finnish principles are present — whiteness, timber and daylight — but at an enormous scale. The main auditorium seats about eighteen hundred with excellent acoustics, and hosts the philharmonic, international concerts and conferences. **What makes a visit worthwhile even without a concert**: the building also holds the **Moomin Museum** — the only world devoted to **Tove Jansson's** characters, with models, original drawings in her own hand, and the five-storey miniature Moomin house. That is what visitors actually come for, families above all. The building is open free during working hours; the museum and concerts are ticketed.

The stories are outwardly for children but are read in Finland as being for adults too: about anxiety, solitude, difference and accepting the outsider — the first were written in the shadow of the war. The Moomins became a Finnish national symbol and a whole industry: series, mugs and a theme park. This museum shows Jansson's original drawings and is the only one devoted to her work in the world.
