Tan Dinh Church, officially the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, is the second-largest church in Ho Chi Minh City after Notre-Dame Cathedral, and its colour is what sets it apart. It was built in the French period and completed on 16 December 1876, mainly in a Romanesque Revival style with Gothic and Renaissance touches. Since 1957 it has been painted a soft pink inside and out, which earned it the nickname the Pink Church and made it one of the most photographed buildings in the city. The bell tower rises over the main entrance on Hai Ba Trung Street and is easy to see from across the road. The best view of the front is from the opposite pavement, and the interior is pink too, arches and columns alike. The gates usually open only at Mass times; modest dress and quiet are expected.
