Small and elegant.
The Theatro Treze de Maio is a historic theatre facing Praça Saldanha Marinho in central Santa Maria. It is named after 13 May 1888, the day slavery was abolished in Brazil; its founding association was formalised early in 1889, and the first performances were staged before the end of that year. Interest in live theatre waned after the town's first cinema opened in 1911. The city bought the building in 1913, the theatre closed in December 1915, and for many decades it housed a local newspaper. In 1992 the community launched a restoration campaign, inspired by Eva Sopher, who had rescued the Theatro São Pedro in Porto Alegre, and the theatre reopened on 23 December 1996. Listed as municipal heritage since 2014, it hosts plays and concerts through the year, and its façade can be seen from the square at any time. Check the programme to catch a show in its small, elegant hall.
