Vila Belga, the «Belgian Village», is a historic housing quarter in central Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul, built in the early twentieth century for staff of the Belgian railway company that completed the Porto Alegre – Uruguaiana line. Santa Maria was one of the most important junctions on that line, with the company's offices and workshops in town. The quarter was designed by the Belgian engineer Gustave Wauthier and is made up of single-storey houses joined in pairs. Of the original eighty houses, seventy-nine survive, forming forty buildings along four main streets and five blocks, and most still keep their original form. The village is listed as historic and cultural heritage of the municipality and is still lived in, so it is seen on foot from the streets, with respect for the residents' privacy. It lies close to the old station building, and the two make an easy walk together.
