Tianjin's modern symbol, a giant Ferris wheel 120 metres high, unusual because it is built on Yongle Bridge itself above the Hai River, so the river and the traffic pass beneath it; it opened to visitors on 7 April 2008. It carries 48 glass capsules, each for eight people, and a full turn takes about 30 minutes; from the top you see the river cutting through the city with its many bridges and old quarters, and on clear days the view reaches far. The evening is the best time to ride, when the wheel is lit in colour and mirrored in the river, and near the bridge night cruises on the Hai River set off past the bridges and floodlit old buildings on both banks. Tickets are about CNY 90 by day and about CNY 138 in the evening, sold up to three days ahead, with the wheel running from 9:30 to 21:30, per visitor guides. Queues are long on holidays, so book ahead.
