A pedestrian street 687 metres long on the west bank of the Hai River, rebuilt in 1986 with small shops in the style of the Qing dynasty, with curved roofs and wooden signboards, on the site of Tianjin's oldest market and trading quarter. It is lined with more than a hundred shops of traditional crafts, the best known being Yangliuqing folk New Year prints, the painted clay figures associated with the Zhang family, kites, old books and musical instruments, and at its centre lies the square of the old Tianhou temple. About two kilometres to the west stands the Tianjin Great Mosque, the city's oldest and best-known mosque, built under the Qing more than three centuries ago in the style of Chinese palaces; five small pavilions crown its prayer hall, which holds about a thousand worshippers, it was restored between 2009 and 2011, and a modern Arab-style mosque stands beside it. The street and the mosque are free, and visitors are welcome at the mosque outside prayer times in modest dress, per visitor guides. The Northwest Corner (Xibeijiao) neighbourhood around the mosque is famous for halal breakfasts and snacks from Hui Muslim cooks.
