Tibidabo is Barcelona's highest and most strangely enchanted summit: an amusement park of 1899 — among the world's oldest running — clinging to a mountaintop, its rides turning with the whole city carpeted below to the sea. The red Ferris wheel and the antique aeroplane circling over open air are Barcelona's immortal images. Its magic is double-layered: wooden rides, mirror mazes and automata of a century past beside modern inverters, making it a living museum of fun as much as a funfair. Above all rises the Sacred Heart church with its towering statue — whose lift reaches the highest lookout in the entire city. Arrival is itself a historic rite: the old Blue Tram, then the century-old funicular to the top. Check the calendar without fail — it runs weekends and seasons, not daily.
