An amusement park inside **Marselisborg Forest** south of Aarhus, the biggest thing in the city for families and far less crowded than Copenhagen's Tivoli. The name means "Freedom", and it opened in 1959. What distinguishes it from ordinary amusement parks is that it is **inside a real forest**: the rides are spread among tall oak and beech, and the paths between them are shaded, so it does not read as an open asphalt lot. It has about **forty rides**, the best known being **Cobra** โ a steel coaster that turns its riders upside down โ and the **Sky Tower** drop, alongside a whole section for small children. In the evenings it becomes a concert venue with an open-air stage, and in December a **Christmas market** with lights and toboggans. Note: **it is entirely seasonal** โ usually open from late April to mid-September, then for Halloween and Christmas weeks. It is closed most of the year. Note: the entry ticket and the ride ticket are **sometimes separate** โ ask for the all-inclusive one.

They serve different purposes. **Tivoli Copenhagen** is a historic garden of 1843 in the heart of the capital, visually far prettier and internationally famous, with gardens, lighting and restaurants โ worth visiting without riding anything, but **crowded and dearer**. **Tivoli Friheden** is a practical amusement park in a forest, with rides more thrilling for over-tens, shorter queues and a lower price, but it is not a sight in its own right. If you are in Aarhus with children this is the sensible one; do not travel from Copenhagen for it.
