The Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre is a small museum in Luang Prabang devoted to the diverse peoples of Laos. It displays clothing, tools and crafts that speak of the life of highland communities and others, explaining what you may later see in villages and markets. It suits anyone who wants to understand the country as well as its temples. The centre is known for its collection on four of the main minority groups in Laos, according to one guide. It concentrates on people, their crafts and daily customs, giving you a simple introduction to the country's diversity. In the small rooms you see embroidered costumes, traditional tools and a display of part of a house, together with photographs and information panels. The compact space makes it easy to move around and read without tiring. Outside are an old building with white columns and a tropical garden, along with a craft shop selling the communities' work. It stands near the town centre and opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 18:00, closing on Mondays, so check before you go. An hour is enough, and it combines well with Wat Mai or Mount Phousi. Treat the exhibits with respect and ask before taking photos in the rooms.
