The Sóller train is 1912 unmodified: mahogany-and-brass carriages leaving Palma as they left a century ago, climbing the UNESCO Tramuntana range through thirteen tunnels and stone viaducts, then opening onto the Sóller valley — a sea of orange and lemon groves between rock walls — descending to the old-square town. From Sóller its equally wooden Orange Tram continues to the round harbour and its cafés — the pair by venerable consensus Mallorca's finest day beyond Palma. The afternoon train back closes the circle. It is a train experience, not transport: slower and dearer than the bus by design — the ticket buys a century backwards. Book ahead in peak seasons and sit right going up for the valleys.
