The Ottoman Clock Tower is a white tower in a square inside the Old City of Tripoli, near its covered markets, and one of the Old City's best-known and most photographed sights. It rises several storeys, with a clock at the top facing all four directions. The tower dates from the Ottoman period in the 19th century, according to architectural records, when the Ottoman state put up clock towers in many of its cities. It has become a meeting point and the place where many visitors start their walk through the lanes of the Old City. You see the white tower with its classical decoration, arched windows and small balconies rising above the low buildings of the square, and it is lit in the evening, when it looks finest. Around it run market lanes and craft shops, and from here it is a few minutes' walk to the Arch of Marcus Aurelius and the Red Castle. The Red Castle is under half a kilometre away in a straight line. Sources say foreigners need a tour operator or local sponsor to visit Libya. The UK Foreign Office currently advises against all but essential travel to this area, so check official guidance before planning.
