The Ulrepforte is a thirteenth-century stone gate, a surviving piece of Cologne's medieval city wall. The wall once ringed the whole city; only a few scattered gates and towers remain today. The gate itself is fairly small next to the other survivors. It was walled up in the fourteenth century after fighting inside the city and stayed sealed for centuries, before being restored in the nineteenth. Today it stands at the edge of the green belt that circles central Cologne — the ground the wall once occupied. The gate now serves as the home of one of Cologne's carnival societies, so it cannot normally be entered. The visit is very short — fifteen minutes — and free. It is a stop for anyone interested in the city's history or walking the green belt, not a destination in itself.
