A cemetery unlike a cemetery: a **designed botanical garden** that people walk in for pleasure, and regularly ranked among the most beautiful in Europe. It is the work of one man. In **1905** **Herman Haller** took over its management — a gardener rather than an administrator — with an idea nobody had tried: that a cemetery should be **a public park** where the living find rest, not a bleak space visited once a year. He carried it out over **thirty years**: planting more than **seven thousand trees** — cypress, fir, birch and magnolia — arranged into long **green arcades**, intersecting avenues and circular clearings, clipped to geometric form. The graves sit **inside** that design rather than the other way round. The result reads as a baroque garden: straight axes, clipped green walls at a constant height, and light coming through between them. Haller wrote that his aim was for a visitor to find «calm, not sorrow». Note: **it is a working cemetery** — respect is expected, photograph discreetly, and avoid funeral times.

In Varaždin, yes — the place was **designed** for people to walk in, the municipality lists it among the town''s sights, and residents genuinely stroll there. But the obvious rules hold: **keep your voice down**, stay on the paths, do not sit on graves or touch the headstones, and **do not photograph a funeral or people at a graveside** — photograph the design and the trees, not the mourners. ⚠ Avoid **1 November** (All Saints) if you want quiet; the cemetery fills with families and candles and it is its most important day. ⚠ The same applies to **Mirogoj** in Zagreb, which is better known and visited for the same reason — its architecture and arcades.
