By train from Luxembourg station to Ettelbruck or Diekirch, then a bus to Vianden, about an hour and a quarter in total. **All of it is free** โ public transport across Luxembourg has carried no fare since 2020. By car it is about fifty minutes. Nothing needs booking in advance except the castle at the height of summer.

Vianden is a small town clinging to the slope of the Our valley beneath its castle, with only a few thousand inhabitants โ yet it is the best-known town in Luxembourg outside the capital, and the country's first choice for a weekend. The main street, the Grand-Rue, climbs from the bridge to the castle between stone houses with slate roofs and flowers on the balconies. By the bridge stands the house Victor Hugo lived in during his exile, now a small museum. The town is enclosed by medieval walls, of which sections and towers survive. The full view is reached by the chairlift that rises from the riverbank to the top of the opposite hill: from there the castle, the town and the valley appear in one frame, and it is the most famous image in Luxembourg. The whole town can be walked in an hour, but the best of it is staying the night โ it empties of day visitors after sunset and becomes entirely quiet.
