A temple on the Thonburi bank at Memorial Bridge, built in 1828 by the minister Somdet Chao Phraya Prayurawong of the powerful Bunnag family under Rama III. Its landmark is a huge white bell-shaped stupa in Sri Lankan style, one of Bangkok's largest, which visitors can enter to find a small museum of relics and statues found inside it during restoration. Its quirkiest feature is Khao Mo, Turtle Mountain: an artificial hill of rock and stucco in a pond, said to have been inspired by King Rama III seeing the shapes of melted candle wax, topped with little shrines, stupas and trees, its pond home to dozens of turtles that visitors feed. The temple's restoration won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation. Entry is free and donations are welcome. Modest dress is expected: shoulders and knees covered, and shoes off inside the halls. It is quiet with few visitors despite being close to Chinatown. Walk there over Memorial Bridge from the flower market, then carry on along the river to Santa Cruz Church and Wat Kalayanamit.
