A temple on the Thonburi bank opposite the Grand Palace, known as the Bell Temple because King Rama I gave it bells found on its grounds; visitors now ring the rows of bells hung in its court for luck, and their chiming fills the place. The temple has a lovely teak library, originally the house of King Rama I before he took the throne, with fine carving and paintings. It is also linked to the monk Somdet Toh, one of Thailand's most famous nineteenth-century monks, whose large bronze statue in the court draws people to pray, and whose amulets are among the most prized in the country. At the temple pier visitors feed the river's many fish. Entry is free and donations are welcome. Modest dress is expected: shoulders and knees covered, and shoes off inside the halls. The easiest way there is the small ferry from Tha Chang pier near the Grand Palace for a token fare, crossing in minutes. Make it a break after the Grand Palace, as the ferry drops you right there, and it sees few foreign visitors.
Rung for luck.
