A chain of fire signals

The oldest surviving coastal watchtower in Malta, built in 1610 on St Paul's Bay under Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt, whose name it carries. The tower is the starting point of a complete defensive system. The Knights faced a practical problem: Malta is a small island with a long coastline, and raids — by corsairs and by the Ottoman fleet — arrived before any response could be organised. The solution was a chain of towers set close enough that each could see the two beside it, so a fire or smoke signal passed from tower to tower and reached the capital within minutes. This tower is the first in that chain, and its square design with four corner turrets became the model repeated in later towers. The interior is small: a few rooms and a stair to the roof, where the whole logic becomes clear — you see the bay, the coast and the other towers on the horizon. Decisive practical points: hours are very limited — it opens a few days a week and often only in the morning, and is run by volunteers. Check before going; arriving on a closed day is entirely possible.

Because the island sat on the front line between Europe and the Ottoman Empire, and corsair raids on coastal villages carried off inhabitants into slavery. Any delay in the alarm meant a whole village. The towers were not for fighting but for communication: their task was to pass the news as fast as possible before the raiders reached inland.
St Paul's Bay itself and its waterfront, the nearby Mistra Battery, and Majjistral Park on the west coast. The whole northern area makes a half day by car or bus from Valletta.
