An old fishing village in the south of Xiamen island, ringed by hills on three sides and facing the sea on the fourth across the coastal Huandao Road; more than eight hundred years old, its name means «village of the Zeng family's houses» in the southern Fujian dialect. Old red-brick houses and buildings in a South-East Asian style, built by returning emigrants, are scattered through it. After the coastal road opened in 2000, artists and guesthouse owners moved in, and since 2012 it has been a «creative village», nicknamed China's most artistic fishing village, with narrow lanes full of cafés, small shops and food stalls. Entry is free and it is open all day; it is busiest from 6 to 11 pm, when the night snack market opens, and the beach lies across the road, per visitor guides. Pork is common in the local snacks, so ask about ingredients.
