A coastal fortress at the southeastern tip of Xiamen Island, built in 1894 under the Qing to guard the city from the sea, and a nationally protected historic site since 1996. Its showpiece is a huge German coastal gun made by Krupp, of 280 mm calibre, said to be the largest surviving nineteenth-century coastal gun in the world and listed by Guinness World Records in 2000. The fort has walls, passages, old barracks and an exhibition of historic weapons, and it looks out over the open sea and nearby islands, beside the coastal road and beaches. Tickets are about CNY 25 in season and 20 off-season, per visitor guides. It's near Xiamen University, so pair the two in half a day.
