Danilo Galafassi Municipal Park, better known as the Municipal Zoo, is a public conservation area in Cascavel. It opened in 1976 to protect local plants and animals and some of the springs of the Cascavel River, and a zoo was added in December 1978 on about eighteen hectares next to the Lago Municipal. The zoo keeps more than three hundred animals from thirty-seven bird, twenty-three mammal and eight reptile species, most of them Brazilian, including threatened species such as the spider monkey and the jaguar; lions and tigers are the only animals from abroad. Enclosures are set among native vegetation, and some small birds and mammals roam free in the grounds. Inside there is a natural history museum and environmental education centre with rocks, crystals and fossils on display. The park welcomes around three hundred thousand visitors a year, and entry is free from Tuesday to Sunday.
