A Smithsonian museum on the National Mall beside the Washington Monument, the world's largest museum devoted to African American history and culture. It was established in 2003 and opened its permanent home in 2016, after efforts stretching back to the early 20th century. The building stands out from afar with its stepped shape like an upturned crown and a bronze-coloured metal lattice facade. It was designed by a team of architects that won the competition in 2009, and built between 2012 and 2016. The visit begins in the lower floors, which tell the story of slavery, freedom and civil rights, then rises to floors on culture, music, sport and the arts; at its centre is the Contemplative Court, where water pours down from a ring in the ceiling. Entry is free with a free timed pass, usually 10:00–17:30, per visitor guides. The museum is large and moving, so allow at least half a day and start with the lower floors.
