The Smithsonian museum of the heritage of the United States in social, political, cultural, scientific and military history, on the National Mall at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue. It received 2.1 million visitors in 2023. It opened in 1964 as the Museum of History and Technology, in one of the last buildings designed by the celebrated firm McKim, Mead & White, and took its present name in 1980. Its most famous exhibit is the original Star-Spangled Banner, the flag that inspired the American national anthem, shown in a dimly lit gallery of its own to protect it, along with displays on the First Ladies and their gowns, transport, inventions and everyday life through the centuries. Entry is free, like all Smithsonian museums, usually 10:00–17:30, per visitor guides. It pairs easily with the neighbouring National Museum of African American History and Culture.
