Al Mirani Fort is a 16th-century stronghold on a rocky hill in Old Muscat, overlooking the Sea of Oman, Al Alam Palace and the old port. Long closed to visitors, it opened in April 2024 and has become one of the most striking new additions to the capital's sights. The fort existed before the Portuguese arrived and was rebuilt by them in 1587, around the time nearby Al Jalali Fort went up. Omani press describes it as the first fort in Oman fitted with cannons, with a special place in history for its part in ending Portuguese rule. It is also known as the Western Fort. In 2023 the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism signed an agreement for a private company to manage and run it. You climb stone passages between round towers and crenellated walls, through courtyards, past an old stone arch with a Latin inscription and a small white domed building. From the top the view spreads over the bay, mountains and old town. Today the fort hosts Omani cultural events, including live music and art workshops. It lies 500 m in a straight line from the centre of Old Muscat, so it fits a round with Al Alam Palace and the National Museum. The many steps call for proper shoes, and in the hot months the best time is before sunset and into the evening, as it stays open late. Dress modestly out of respect for the place.
