The national museum of the Sultanate of Oman in Old Muscat, opposite Al Alam Palace, established by royal decree in 2013 and opened on 30 July 2016 as the country's flagship cultural institution. It tells Oman's story from the earliest human settlement on the Oman peninsula some two million years ago to the present, with 5,466 objects, including an internationally important collection of prehistoric metal artefacts and Oman's silverwork tradition. Highlights include the Land and People gallery and the maritime gallery with full-size traditional boats, along with carved doors, manuscripts and jewellery. There are 43 interactive digital experiences, an ultra-high-definition cinema, discovery areas for children and open storage where visitors see how objects are cared for. Tickets are 5 OMR for tourists, 2 OMR for residents and 1 OMR for Omani and GCC citizens, card payment only; it opens daily from 10:00 to 17:00, with the ticket desk closing at 16:30, according to the official site.
