A madrasa built by Allah Kuli Khan of Khiva in 1834-1835 on the east side of Itchan Kala, beside the caravanserai and covered market he also built. It stands on an artificial mound 3 m high, so it looks taller than its neighbours, and with the Khojamberdibiy Madrasa, the market and the Palvan gate it forms a single architectural scene. It has 99 student rooms (some sources say 90), winter and summer mosques and a lecture hall. All its decoration is on the outside: a tall portal in blue and white tile and small corner towers, while the rooms inside are plain. It was one of the leading schools of its day, with students of many peoples, many of them Kazakhs and Turkmens, and a library; the khan endowed it with the income of the neighbouring market and caravanserai. Its façade can be seen for free from the square, and the two-day Itchan Kala ticket covers most of the madrasa museums, per visitor guides. It looks its best lit up at night.
