A towering flagpole on the Aqaba waterfront, 130 m tall, opened on 3 October 2004; it was the tallest free-standing flagpole in the world until 2008. It flies the flag of the Great Arab Revolt, commemorating the Battle of Aqaba in 1917. The flag measures 60 by 30 m and can be seen from far across the gulf. The pole stands in the Great Arab Revolt Plaza beside Aqaba Fort, an open square where locals and visitors stroll by the sea in the evening. It is free and open all day. The best photos are from the Corniche or from a boat on the gulf, with the mountains rising behind it.
