Barcelona's aquarium in the old harbour is one of Europe's great Mediterranean houses: eleven thousand sea creatures across tanks that tell the Mediterranean first — its true speciality — then the tropics in their colours. Its heart is the Oceanarium: an eighty-metre glass tunnel walking you beneath an open seabed where sand tiger sharks and great rays wheel overhead — the children's unforgettable moment, joined by dedicated young-visitor halls, penguins and seals. Its position is golden in Port Vell: a boardwalk over the water from the Rambla's foot, boats, the Maremagnum mall and harbour restaurants around — making it the centrepiece of a family harbour half-day more than a standalone trip.
