An archaeological museum in a building completed in 1939 near Place Hassan II, one of the most important in northern Morocco, showing finds from the region's ancient sites, above all Lixus near Larache and Tamuda near Tetouan, a Mauretanian and then Roman town. Its highlights are the colourful Roman mosaics found at Lixus, with figures and geometric patterns, some mounted on the gallery walls and some in the museum garden, along with amphorae, small bronze statues, pottery, lamps and inscribed gravestones. Other rooms show prehistoric tools, Punic objects and a model of the famous M'zora stone circle near Larache. The quiet garden, with mosaics displayed under a pergola, is one of its loveliest corners. An adult ticket costs ten dirhams and a child's three according to the National Museums Foundation; it opens from ten to six and closes on Tuesdays. It is a few minutes from the Royal Palace and the medina.
