Arena da Baixada, officially the Estádio Mario Celso Petraglia, is the home of Athletico Paranaense in the Água Verde district close to central Curitiba, holding about 42,400 spectators. It was the first stadium in South America with a retractable roof and the first in Brazil to sell its naming rights to a sponsor. The site's story goes back to 1914, when Joaquim Américo Guimarães, president of the «Internacional» club that preceded Athletico, led the building of the first ground on land that had been an army powder store; Athletico inherited it when it was founded ten years later. The old stadium was demolished in 1997 and a new one opened in 1999, then rebuilt between 2012 and 2014 to host matches of the 2014 World Cup. You can see it from outside at any time, its modern form clear from the surrounding streets, but the real atmosphere comes on match days, with tickets through the club. The club has run stadium tours at various times, so check its website for availability.
