Teatro Paiol is a theatre-in-the-round in Curitiba's Prado Velho district, in a circular Roman-style building that the Brazilian Army built in 1874 as the city's new gunpowder and ammunition store, replacing the old one too close to inhabited areas. It later became the city's store for explosives and flammables, until in the 1910s the army banned keeping anything explosive there. In 1917 the city turned it into an archive for municipal documents, and later an office for the street-paving department. Under mayor Jaime Lerner a project was drawn up to turn the building into a theatre: its original features were kept, and the interior became the city's first arena theatre, with seating for 225 around a central stage. Today it is one of Curitiba's best-loved intimate venues for music and theatre, and sitting close to the performers under the stone roof is a special experience. Tickets by programme; the round building can be seen from outside at any time.
