The Artxanda funicular lifts all Bilbao to your eyes: three minutes since 1915 from riverbank to hilltop — and above: the city's absolute balcony, the whole narrow valley with its winding river, the Guggenheim's titanium gleaming at its heart, green hills for the frame. The summit is purely Basque family ground: picnic lawns, playgrounds and traditional txoko restaurants the city climbs to on its Sundays — and the sunset visitor watches the town light itself below. Its lower station stands steps from Zubizuri — making the river trio (bridge, funicular, Guggenheim) Bilbao's finest opening, at five euros return.
