Beco do Batman is a narrow lane in Vila Madalena, São Paulo's arty western neighbourhood, with every wall covered in colourful graffiti, an open-air gallery of street art. It is named after a Batman figure painted on one of its walls in the 1980s, after which artists covered the walls with work influenced by cubism and psychedelia. The pieces change all the time as artists compete for wall space, so no two visits look the same. Time Out has called it a community-owned open-air graffiti gallery showing the work of the city's best street artists, and the murals spill into the surrounding streets. The neighbourhood is full of cafés, small galleries and craft shops. Daytime visits are best, and Sundays are busiest with photographers.
