The Instituto Tomie Ohtake opened in November 2001 as a centre for art, architecture and design, named after the Japanese-born painter Tomie Ohtake. Its building was designed by her son, the architect Ruy Ohtake, and the institute was founded by his brother Ricardo Ohtake. It sits in the Ohtake Cultural complex, with a convention centre and two office towers joined by a great hall. Its shows focus on the art of the last sixty years, and it has staged exhibitions never seen before in Brazil of artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Josef Albers, Yayoi Kusama, Salvador Dalí and Joan Miró, alongside contemporary-art teaching programmes for teachers and students. Entry is free Tuesday to Sunday 11:00-19:00, near Faria Lima metro station.
