Beijing's National Stadium, known worldwide as the «Bird's Nest» for its interwoven steel frame that looks like a giant nest, built for the 2008 Summer Olympics and completed in June that year, with room for about 80,000 spectators. It is one of the best-known icons of modern Chinese architecture; it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Games and then those of the 2022 Winter Olympics, becoming the first stadium in the world to open both a Summer and a Winter Games. It stands on the vast Olympic Green beside the National Aquatics Centre, the «Water Cube», with its bubble-like façade, and both buildings look their best at night, lit up in colour. Walking the Olympic Green and seeing the stadium from outside are free, while going inside is ticketed, per visitor guides. Evening is the loveliest time, and the metro goes straight there.
