China's oldest zoo, founded in 1906 in the late Qing dynasty on the grounds of an old imperial estate at Xizhimen, west of the centre; its 89 hectares of willow-shaded streams, lotus ponds, lawns and old pavilions look like a classical Chinese garden, and it keeps one of the largest animal collections in the country. Most visitors come for the giant pandas in the panda house, and there are animals from every continent, flamingos and pelicans among them; the Beijing Aquarium inside the grounds has its own ticket. Entry is CNY 15 from April to October and CNY 10 in winter, or CNY 19 and 14 with the panda house, per visitor guides. Go early in the morning, when the pandas are most active.
