Borgo Maggiore is a town at the foot of Monte Titano, right below the old City of San Marino, and one of the country's nine municipalities. A wide square with arcades, painted houses and a white church tower sit below the mountain and its towers. It was once called Mercatale, the marketplace, and it is still San Marino's most important market town. About 6,950 people live here, making it the country's second-largest town after Dogana. The highway from the Italian border ends here, and it holds the lower station of the cable car. You walk Piazza Grande among arcades and cafes and see the white front of the Church of Suffrage. From the town you see the Titano cliff and the towers above. You ride the cable car up to the old town in two minutes, watching the town below from the car. The square is 140 m from the lower cable car station. Walking is free. Parking is easier here than in the old town, so many visitors leave their cars here and ride up by cable car.
