Porta San Francesco is the main entrance to the walled old town of San Marino. A square stone tower with battlements at the top stands over a pointed arch through which people pass into the paved streets, with the national coat of arms on its front. The gate was part of the walls that protected the town on Monte Titano and is today within the World Heritage Site. Its walls carry stone plaques with old Latin inscriptions on the guard and the rules for entering the town. You stand before the tower and see the battlements and coat of arms above the arch, then pass inside where the narrow, climbing stone-paved streets begin among old houses, shops and cafes. Most visitors start their walk up through the old town to the Palazzo Pubblico and the towers from here. By the gate is a stop for buses from Rimini. The gate is 170 m from the Palazzo Pubblico. It is open and free. It gets busy in summer and on holidays, and the streets beyond climb steeply.
