The San Marino cable car links Borgo Maggiore at the foot of Monte Titano with the old town at the top. The ride lasts only two minutes, but it gives one of the country's finest views, over the plain, the province of Rimini and the Adriatic Sea. From 1932 to 1944 the Rimini–San Marino railway linked the two towns, until it was bombed in the Second World War and closed. A highway replaced it, and then the cable car was built. The state public transport company runs it today, with a car every 15 minutes, carrying about 500,000 passengers a year on about 21,000 trips. You board at the upper station near the centre of the old town and glide down over red roofs and trees to Borgo Maggiore. From the window you watch the town recede on its rock and the plain open out below. At the bottom is the old market square. The upper station is 420 m from the Palazzo Pubblico. The fare is separate; we found no current price. Holders of the Tutto San Marino guest card get a discount. Queues can be long in summer.
