The Sumidouro and Cachoeira do Funil, the Sinkhole and Funnel Waterfall, is a rock formation in rural Santa Leopoldina, about two kilometres from the town centre, where the Santa Maria River, one of the state's main rivers, «disappears» among the rocks and reappears two hundred metres further on. The Espírito Santo culture council has listed the site for protection. It is reached by driving two kilometres along the ES-264 from the town centre to the Funil bridge over the river, from which the sinkhole and waterfall are easy to see, as the bridge stands over the dry bed. The river here twists through a chain of cascades among stacked boulders, and no one knows whether they piled up in a rockslide or by nature alone. Emperor Pedro II visited and wrote in his diary that he was «enchanted» by the sight. It makes a short stop that pairs well with the Museu do Colono in town.
