Santa Leopoldina is a small mountain town of about 14,000 people in central Espírito Santo, some 44 kilometres from Vitória, known for its waterfalls, country pousadas and the old houses of its European settlers. It was founded in 1856 by about sixty Swiss immigrants who came up the Santa Maria da Vitória River by boat; the area was called Porto do Cachoeiro because the river breaks into falls here and stops navigation. The town became a river port shipping the produce of the German, Swiss and Italian colonies to the capital, and its centre still keeps buildings from that era. Today the municipality lives from farming and is Brazil's largest ginger producer, exporting most of it to the United States and Europe, along with coffee, bananas and peppers. Visitors come all year for its waterfalls, country trails and the quiet of hills close to Vitória.
