The Settler's Museum in the hill town of Santa Leopoldina, west of Vitória, is one of the highlights of tourism in Espírito Santo. It opened on 18 April 1969, is run by the state culture secretariat, and was first called the Immigrant Museum before becoming the Museu do Colono. The building was put up in 1877 as the home of the Austrian Holzmeister family, among the first to settle Santa Leopoldina. The state government bought it in 1969 and listed it as state heritage. It has been restored twice: in 1994, when the Alice Holzmeister Gallery for local exhibitions opened, and in 2006, when its infrastructure was modernised. The museum holds more than six hundred items, mostly from the nineteenth century, recreating the home life of a well-off family of the late 1800s: furniture, faience from around the world, opaline glass, photographs, musical instruments and antique clocks. Combine it with the nearby Funil waterfall on a day trip from Vitória.
